Your Mouth is a Cage, So Shut It!

By David J. Stewart

James 3:8, “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

God has made a built-in cage for our tongue; it's called a mouth. Our teeth are really little bars that encage that evil tongue. As long as your mouth is closed, those bars are shut and the wild tongue that the Bible says CANNOT BE TAMED is kept safely restrained so it cannot rend and tear apart others.

The Bible has much to say about men's tongues and their wicked mouths. Jesus said it is out of the MOUTH that the wickedness of the heart comes forth. Matthew 15:18, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.”

Matthew 15:11, “...that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”

So if you shut your mouth, then that wickedness won't get out to hurt others. No wonder Jesus said in Matthew 12:36, “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” God is going to hold us accountable in eternity even for the words that we speak. This out to frighten you; it certainly does me. I've learned to just keep my tongue inside the bars of teeth by keeping my mouth shut!!! Keep that tongue locked in the natural cage God made of your mouth. You can't gossip and slander when your teeth are closed. Did you know that? So shut up! Learn to tell people, SHUT UP!

I'll tell you, having BIG FINGERS is just as evil as having a BIG MOUTH. The internet is a weapon! Your keyboard is a gun! Use it for the Lord. That's one main reason I just keep to myself and stay quiet (unless I'm preaching or teaching). I don't like chat rooms and forums for that very reason, that is, too much gossip. I visited a so-called Christian forum and was shocked at the amount of hatred and gossip being strewed in there. It's a cesspool of iniquity. I left and never went back. That was years ago. I never joined, I just went to visit and am sorry that I did. What a bunch of babies, cutthroats and backslidden hypocrites! GET RIGHT WITH GOD if that is you. The internet is a dangerous place!!!

Proverb 17:28, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.”

Did you read what God said in Proverb 17:28... HE THAT SHUTTETH HIS LIPS IS ESTEEMED A MAN OF UNDERSTANDING. Even if a person is a total fool and without understanding, the Bible says that they'll be considered wise and understanding by others just for keeping quiet. Opening one's mouth is often synonymous with foolishness in the Bible. This is way the Bible commands, “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6). Salt makes people thirsty. Our words ought to make people thirsty for the things of God; rather then talking bad about others and behaving as Satan, accusing people.

May we focus on laboring for for Christ with our energy—soul-winning, contending for the faith, taking a stand for God against evil, enduring the hardships and “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

God hates gossip. Gossip destroys people's lives and is rooted in self-righteous hypocrisy. James 2:10 states, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” You are just as guilty in God's eyes as the vilest sinner, as so am I. There is NONE righteous no not one (Romans 3:10). Ecclesiastes 7:20, “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” James 5:9: “Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.”

James 4:10-12, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?”

As long as our mouth is closed, our tongue is restrained. The Bible says the tongue CANNOT BE TAMED. May we all learn to keep our mouth closed, because if you do talk without a purpose, you will gossip. The tongue cannot be tamed.

Proverb 11:9, “An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.”
