The Lord Is Our Buckler

By David J. Stewart

The Lord is our buckler the Bible teaches. The interesting word "buckler" in Proverb 2:7 is the Hebrew term magen meginnah and means “a shield; figuratively, a protector.” Literally, God is our shield. This PROMISE from God is only to those believers who walk uprightly. If you go looking for trouble you'll find it.

Proverb:2:6-8, “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.”

Please understand that this Scripture does not mean we are now invincible to earthly harm, theft, and attack. Thieves will always break through and steel in this world as Jesus warned in Matthew 6:20. That's why the Lord told us to lay up treasures in Heaven by soul-winning, contending for the faith, living uprightly in Christ's strength, and giving to those who cannot give anything back to us because they are lame, deaf, blind, maimed, imprisoned, or poor. God will reward His children on many fronts, for numerous things, and in various ways. Great rewards are promised by God in Luke 6 to those who are despised, rejected, harassed, ridiculed, and alienated for their faith in God. If you live for God, this wicked world is going to hate you and persecute you (John 15:19). You will be persecuted (2nd Timothy 3:12).

Albeit, God is a shield to each believer, having the Bible and the Holy Spirit to guide us through life (John 16:13, King James Bible). God's Word is a Lamp unto our feet in this dark world of sin. We are blessed to have God's Holy Spirit dwelling within us (Romans 8:9). Beware of anyone who talks about spiritual matters, but never mentions the Bible. God's Spirit ALWAYS works with God's Word, i.e., the Bible.

The Lord is our Buckler, our protector, our shield. He will watch over us. That doesn't mean bad things won't ever happen to us, because we do live in a fallen world of sin and evil; it just means that God will be with us through it all, even unto the end and forever. You may get mugged coming home from work, and not understand why God allowed it to happen; but it's for the same reason that Herod had his thugs murder thousands of innocent children in an attempt to kill Jesus... we live in a fallen world. Evil is everywhere in this world, because Adam opened the floodgate of sin to come in (Romans 5:12).

If a drunk pulls into your lane and takes your legs off in a crash (drunk driving is no accident), then it's because of the evil booze cartel, and some fool who drank booze to begin with. God is not to blame for allowing the human race to continue, when men are the one's who hurt each other. Granted, we cannot understand why God does and allows a lot of things; but who are we, the created, to question our awesome Creator?

I know a Christian man who was nearly beaten to death years ago with a baseball bat by a man high on drugs. The criminal was never caught. This is the wicked world in which we live. You can rest assure that God saw what happened, and Judgment Day is coming (Hebrews 9:27). You should be scared friend if you are not saved (Hebrews 10:31). If you are saved, you should be scared if you are not living for God (2nd Corinthians 5:10-11).

We must use wisdom when interpreting the Scriptures. The Bible never promises a life of fun, plenty, and prosperity here on earth. Don't believe a lying minister who tells you different. Many people suffer in this world, some horribly, many forgotten about in nursing homes and all sorts of government institutions. But don't blame God, for Satan is the god of this sinful world. That's why evil men and women prosper. God sees it all. The tables will be turned. Things are going to change I assure you my friend. Are you on the winning side in Christ Jesus? Is the Lord your Buckler, your Savior?
